Sporting Car Club of SA Classic and Modern Run
I woke up on Sunday morning to a pretty random text from my aunt. She was going to catch up over coffee with an old childhood friend. He was planning on going to a run up to Anderson Hill Winery with the SA Sporting and Classic Car Club of which he is a member. He invited her along for the ride and knowing I was an enthusiast I got a plus one.
Ash picked up my aunt and I in his 1951 Rover 75 'Cyclops' (named for the single central headlight. The immaculate Rover definitely isn't my usual cup of tea when it comes to cars, but I was pretty surprised by its peppiness driving up Greenhill road. That's when Ash revealed the reason for his love of the car- the engine swap. Whilst I promised I wouldn't tell the secret of this car, lets just say there's something pretty speccy, and distinctly not-Rover under the hood.
Engine swap aside, the Rover was still pretty cool. Restomodded with power steering, AC, a 6-speed manual, disk brakes, and LEDs, it handled better than most younger cars. The suicide doors were very tough too.
Ash, a lifelong enthusiast also has a '50s Triumph roadster and a '97 Volvo V70 T-5 in his collection. The latter was of which was of the most interest to me, given I drive what is pretty well the sedan version. I realised I had exchanged words with him about the Volvo at a red light about a year ago which was a funny coincidence- only in Adelaide...
Once at the Anderson Hill Winery, we were greeted with a car park containing maybe a dozen enthusiast cars ranging from a '50s Austin Mini Cooper S to a modern Aston Martin finished in a stunning satin racing green. Inside the members were sat at a long table, which we were placed at the end of. I mostly chatted to Alan, who had brought his 1979 Porsche 911 SC. His main passion being true vintage cars (his first car was a Model-T), Alan bought the Porsche after his wife requested something sportier. He still has several old American cars but finds himself in the Porsche more often than not.
Doesn't get much better...
The event was pretty fun and I found it surprisingly refreshing talking cars with older enthusiasts. My plans on eventually joining a club were definitely validated too, and I appreciate how good SA is at accommodating these clubs.
