Yeah Bud!
While the nats is just around the corner here's a Low Standards fix to close out 2025.
Keen viewers may have seen Jay post about acquiring a pair of Simmons racing wheels earlier this year. And because the Low Standards HQ is cool relics, birthdays and Aussie brand-centric it's a good time to go a littler deeper.
Jay remarked the pair had spent significant time in a swamp. So while that means they've developed a bita patina, I'd say they are about on brand for Low Standards.
"Yeah, genuine Simmons mags."
"Chuck em on a bonfire and get hours of white flames, haha."
"You know people used to do that with VW cylinder heads."
The barrels are steel, the centres are magnesium - which is where the mag wheels notion originates.
And the tyres, Dunlop Racing - 265/535-13 'FOR RACING PURPOSE ONLY'
Older headz than me will also remember when Dunlop manufactured Volley's (amongst other products).
But for an additional eleven bucks I'd rock the KT-twenty-sixes and have the occasional street chat with a lovely rehabilitated ex-Yatala head. GETTING DISTRACTED...
Certainly a cool looking wheel, and a very different time for Simmons Components. But what do we really know about them?
Speaking of birthdays, if you aren't up to date on Jay's Summernats Torana build, which is gettin one heck of a rebirth, go check out what's happening; HERE
I'm talking James Hunt vs Niki Lauda.
Dunlop backing the Hardie ~ Ferodo 1000.
Colin Bond & H.D.T
RX3 Mayhem.
RS 2k esky.
P76 rallycross car.
And the oh-so important Simmons advertisement.
Lota cool automotive stuff goin down in 75' but the main event is this advertisement...
It's cool to read every little detail of the ad, but the mention of Barry Seton's Capri is the winner. It allowed me to do a bita research and find you images of the Ford V6 Coupe rockin the Simmons.
Even better it seems to have survived into the present decade.
Automotive action in the seventies was no doubt special.
But exactly 50 years on, and boy am I excited to see a one-of-a-kind Torana reborn to Low Standards. The idea that a bunch of great companies like Rare Spares, RACEWORKS, gktech, & more - support Jay's endeavours, not only to build something incredible but also document it for the public to digitally interact with, is a new kind of special. And we should be grateful for it. It's companies backing culture with the same passion they give to motorsport. It's sick we get to see it.
I bet Brockie woulda loved to see it too.
As always chur for the read.
