Hot rods & such
They were on tour (early Feb) and our Mum decided to watch them play some Victoria shows. I managed to score some time off work and tag along for the drive (Adelaide - Melb).
Never turn down a free opportunity to travel.
After one the gigs we cut back from the Mornington Peninsula via the Ferry to Sorrento. In doing so we accidentally came across the remnants of a car show - hot rods & such.
We were in a bit of a rush so I did a quick loop before dialing in on a car that held my attention. A lot easier said than done. Considering so many of these cars are both out of my wheel house but also wonderfully distracting, finding just one to document was hard.
So what managed to take the cake? For the sake of this post I'll just call it THE FORMULA.
Growing up, on the occasion I did see an Aussie classic I'd get my old man's ten cents. Most of the time that just meant he'd tell me a car was a bomb, fuel thirsty or worthless back then. But the response I got the most was - that's what the blokes across the reserve would have, they'd try to hot them up.
This was back when my dad was a teenager. He drove a VW Beetle.
Definitely a yuppie.
He had the 1800cc engine swapped beetle in this photo but he's had an HQ ute & a Falcon wagon, a Sierra & Vitara, 300D Merc, even a BMW E30 (and more). But back when he had the bug the blokes across the reserve were all playing with domestics, especially Holden Kingswoods.
Like this crisp example. Except the FORMULA for these is a bit more hotted up. So when I arrived at the example below I knew it was the car to feature.
A bit of a meanie this Kingswood DELUXE certainly had the FORMULA and if I'm being completely honest I thought it was pretty cool.
No doubt a tricked out eight sits below the tunnel ram bird suckers.
A solid demonstration on how to put together an Aussie classic. Squint and it's just a Kingswood, but have a walk around and it's more than just a cruiser - it's a street machine.
The chrome balance is on point and the white walls are class, I especially enjoy the paint matched visor and second tone roof. It somehow makes the land yacht a bit sleeker looking. While spruced up there is more going on but that's just the FORMULA in action.
