Boat License

December is looking pretty euro-car-centric so here's something different. The boat operators test is very easy, but that didn't stop me from taking a year to do it. When it comes down to it I'm just not a fan of going into Services SA to deal with the bureaucrats. Regardless, the deed is done and I hope to fish more soon.

Aware of my date with the bureaucrats I grabbed a copy of Unique Cars to entertain myself whilst waiting for my ticket to be called. And no surprise I had plenty of time to read.

Except "read" might be a bit generous because I go straight to the back to look at the cars for sale. Long gone are the days of finding a good deal from a magazine. Most of the listings are either modern merc's no one wants, or 80k upwards domestic classics. But something did catch my eye and break my statement.

While I don't have 22-grand burning a hole in my pocket I did think to myself, is this the kind of listing that years from now would seem an obvious buy? Unsure, however, it listed the kilometres as miles which made me question the legitimacy of the listing. Is it real?

So I called the number printed and an older bloke picked up. The car was still for sale and he was unaware of his listing issue. He chose to advertise solely in the magazine and when I asked why he is selling he said "Ah mate I'm 72, you grow out of these things."

So with a six speed manual box, low k's, power at the rear wheels, good sounding boxer and everything left absolutely original I would class this single owner 86 as a good buy. But it's not why I grabbed this mag in particular. I wanted to see the Turbo Wonder.

The feature discusses a very clean S14 that a mechanic convinced his wife to buy new. Since then the car has been meticulously maintained and rarely driven, it's probably the best example in the country. I'm not going to bother recount any more of the story but it did say the S14 had a 81,076 car production run which I assumed meant AU cars. I thought that number would be lower. My own research indicates only 3,950 cars were built for the Aussie market and the production run number the magazine supplied doesn’t line up with the total run either. I’m not sure where they got their number. Regardless, the feature car reminded me of an S14 I saw earlier this year (read here) also red but a facelift model. I imagine the s-chassis price narrative will have a lot in common with the BRZ/86 in years to come.

How to go fishing 2 coming soon.
