Street Sighting ~ Mitsubishi Galant VR-4

You are probably going to look at the images in this post and think, is it really a street sighting if the car is in a car park? Firstly, I was walking down Grant Avenue when I spied the VR-4 and secondly, it's my blog - I shall do as I please. So without further ado...

Not the nicest images (blame the lighting), but this isn't exactly Speedhunters. In hindsight I would have overlooked this car if it hadn't been for the tow point sticker on the rear bumper.

And in case your looking at the TTR decal scratching your head...

Putting aside the crooked park, bad lighting and patina, I was actually very excited when my eyes caught the Galant VR-4 badging. While Mitsubishi manufactured a few cars with the Galant name, along with some badge engineering it's best to think of this model simply as the VR-4. Looking at it in isolation it really was just a precursor to Evo I, but has a special place amongst rally fans. While the introduction of the RX Leone may be seen as the end of 2WD rally it wasn't until VR-4 came on the scene that it became apparent there was no going back.

A few drivers made the switch from Subaru to Mitsubishi with the most notable being Adelaide legend Ed Ordynski who won the Australian Rally Championship in 1990 (in the VR-4).

Looking past the paint and wheel choice, this car is still very, very cool. Manual, full time 4WD, DOHC, and 4WS - all packaged into an unassuming Japanese sedan. I doubt there are many of these are getting about, with the majority likely picked up by motorsport enthusiasts as the prices bottomed out. I'd like to imagine in a car like this I'd have the balls to run it up the Old Cherryville Road but I doubt it. So audio wise, at first I was thinking something a bit slower, Leonard Cohen but not quite. After some deliberation and going the opposite direction with some italo-disco I finally settled on Our Time by Pender Street Steppers. My logic; a fitting track to calm the nerves as it moves sideways through the dirt.
